Personality:

Kanji’s outward appearance of a tough, streetwise punk has left him with a great deal of reputation around Inaba. Rumors of him being in a gang, he doesn’t go to school often, always in fights… people claim he’s a bully. But while it’s true Kanji’s appearance isn’t the friendliest, he’s not exactly the trouble Inaba thinks he is. He just has a tough exterior, an attitude that buffs away the attention and keeps people of his back.

Growing up Kanji learned a lot about tailoring and sewing clothing, dolls and other things from his parents’ textile shop. This made him a bit of a target for ridicule among peers for being so interested in hobbies usually reserved for girls. Misunderstanding his father’s last words which were “Be a man” as a reprimand for being so effeminate, he worked hard to put on a façade of toughness to cover and hide his inner self, which was undoubtedly more sensitive and compassionate than he would let on.

Through the course of the game and with his social link with the MC, Kanji begins to feel comfortable with himself and what he likes doing, no longer focusing so hard on what other people think about him for it. He warms up to his friends, revealing several rumors about him were false or severely misconstrued. (He was never a bully, and rather than being in a gang he simply got in a fight with a local biker gang because of the noise they were making.) He begins to accept his sexuality does not have to coincide in any way with his demeanor or habits, and that ‘being a man’ is simply giving forth 110% in effort to everything he does. He chooses to embrace himself for who he is, and rather than contain his skills he branches out to do productive things with them, like start mentoring in sewing classes for puppets, and making dolls for local children.
